Excellent, Positive Article on Hearing Loss!

Thanks to reporter Neelam Bohra and The New York Times for this informative and upbeat article on hearing loss.

“Hearing Aids are Changing. Their Users are Too.”

Zina Jawadi, pictured, is on HLAA’s National Board of Directors.

Let’s spread this far and wide.

  1. I did not think that the article was excellent. It neglects to mention that OTC hearing aids are only for people with mild to moderate hearing loss. Zina Jawadi probably doesn’t use an OTC aid but the article doesn’t make that clear. One woman interviewed said that she didn’t know what to do because she was told she has a hearing loss and from a relative that they are only for old people. What to do? – The author didn’t mention the consequences of not treating hearing loss. Also, in her discussion of essentially getting around audiologists to get an OTC hearing aid, she didn’t mention the importance of an accurate hearing test, whether from an audiologist or a hearing care specialist. My understanding is that online tests can be sketchy. She seems to dismiss consulting an audiologist. I have written to her about this. The piece was very disappointing.

    • Agreed that it’s important to be aware of degrees of hearing loss and OTC hearing aids are not meant for people who have severe hearing loss. I still can’t access the article…is it possible to send to my email address? Thank you.
